The village ofArâches-la-Frasse in Haute-Savoie, hosts the winter and summer tourist resort Les Carroz d'Arâches.

Understand

The commune of Arâches-la-Frasse includes the villages of La Frasse, Treydon, Ballancy, Craytoral, Arâches and Laÿ; as well as winter sports resorts Les Carroz-d'Arâches and Flaine. This town is located between 800 and 1,600 meters above sea level, on the right bank of the Arve, east of Cluses.

Story

In 1699, Charles de Rochette obtained that the seigneuries of Arâches and Scionzier, which he had just bought, be erected into a county by Duke Victor-Amédée II of Savoy. These purchases follow that of the Château de Cohendier in 1684, which allowed the Lord of Rochette to bear the title of Baron de Cohendier.

The valley of Arâches has a source of ferruginous mineral water, above the village of Moulins, and a coal mine at the end of a ravine formed by the torrent of Planajoux, beyond the village of Pernant. In 1750, this mine was operated by Mademoiselle de Bellegarde des Marches and by the famous Baroness de Warens. The knight of Buttet, of the royal artillery corps, examines it, by order of the court of Turin, and proposes a wooden corridor, to descend the coal to the edge of the Arve, and then transport it on rafts in Bonneville, Carouge and Geneva.

In 1792, two thirds of the population of Arâches worked in watchmaking for Geneva, Carouge, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and Piedmont. This craft was introduced by Sieur Ballaloud in 1720.

In 1844, there were still 186 watchmakers living with their families in the town.

During the debates on the future of the Duchy of Savoy in 1860, the population was sensitive to the idea of a union of the northern part of the Duchy with Switzerland. A petition is circulating in this part of the country (Chablais, Faucigny, Nord du Genevois) and brings together more than 651 signatures, including 20 for the parish. The duchy is reunited with France following a plebiscite organized on April 22 and 23, 1860 where 99.8% of Savoyards answer “yes” to the question “Does Savoy want to be reunited with France? ".

Part of the commune of Saint-Sigismond was separated from it to form the new commune of Frasse in 1869.

In 1936, the winter sports resort of Les Carroz-d'Arâches is created, then in 1968, that of Flaine.

The municipalities of Arâches and La Frasse merged in 1973. On January 1, 2000, the municipality of Arâches changed its name to become Arâches-la-Frasse.
