Arkhangelsk (Russian Архангельск) is a port city in Northwest Russia, Capital of the oblast of the same name and is located on the delta of the mouth of the Northern Dvina in the White Sea.
background
The city was once an important trading center for trade between Russia and Western Europe and was to be expanded by Peter the Great. That is why he stayed longer in Arkhangelsk and built the Novodvinsk fortress 20 km north in 1703, the remains of which are still there today. A short time later, however, he decided to develop St. Petersburg as a naval base and port city for Western European trade, so that Arkhangelsk lost its originally intended importance. Nevertheless, Arkhangelsk has a long seafaring tradition (polar research, shipbuilding, nautical school, trading port).
In terms of tourism, the city is not yet so developed for Western Europeans that you could move around there without any problems - without knowledge of Russian or accompaniment. Too few foreign languages are spoken by the people in this area, and there is seldom any lettering other than Cyrillic. In contrast, the people you talk to are attentive and warm hosts.
