Arcos de la Frontera is an Andalusian city in the province Cadiz (province).

background

The Arcos de la Frontera, founded by the Iberians, was called in Roman times Arco Briga. On the Rio Guadalete not far from Arcos, the king of the Visigoths, Roderich, fell in the fight against the Moorish invaders in July 711. The Moors incorporated the city into their new empire, Al Andalus. It became part of the emirate and then of the Caliphate of Cordoba. When the caliphate came to an end, Arcos initially became an independent one taifa and united with Jerez from 1040-1053 under Aben Jairuan. The Almoravids took over the area in 1091. From 1145-1147 Arcos and Jerez became dependent on Granada taifa. In 1263 the Catholics under Alfonso the Wise of Castile took back Arcos. He built the Gothic cathedral, famous for its 10 bells. The city was in the border area until the fall of Granada in 1492 and was the Christian bulwark against the Moors. The addition to the name de la frontera (at the border) should document that. After Reconquista (Recapture) land was distributed to the nobles, who became wealthy and began to build representative houses and churches in Arcos. Arcos de la Frontera is on the route of the white villages. The city is the largest "white village".
