Argentiera is a former mining settlement with a popular bathing beach in the Sassari Province on the northwest coast of Sardinia.
background
The ore-bearing rock, predominantly silver-bearing galena and pitchblende, in the hills around Argentiera on the Sardinian west coast was possibly already exploited in Roman, very probably in Pisan times. After the ore deposits were no longer accessible in the open pit, shafts were driven into the depths. The oldest shafts were in 1870 Galleria Rietto, Galleria Calabronis and Galleria Superior in operation. As a result, the new manholes Pozzo Mare and Pozzo Podestà (named after Baron Andrea Podestà, the president of the mining company Società Correboi), some of which were connected underground by tunnels. The mined ore was in the Laveria (Washing facility) separated from the rest of the rock and at a pier in the (today's bathing bay) Postage Conte (Near Alghero) and from there for processing Antwerp and shipped to Italian metallurgical plants in later years. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the heyday of ore mining, 300 employees worked here. In 1963 the ore processing plants and the infrastructure were shut down and left to decay, in the meantime a museum has been set up and tourism-oriented providers and holidaymakers are rebuilding the buildings.
The Argentiera mine complex is considered one of the most important in Italian mining - industrial history and is considered part of the Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna placed under UNESCO protection.
