Introduction

Armenian (հայերէն / հայերեն, hayeren) is an Indo-European language, part of an isolated branch not closely related to the others; it is spoken by the Armenians in Armenia, Georgia, Artsakh and the Armenian diaspora around the world (it is estimated that there are 7,000,000 speakers of the language). It is divided into two main dialects: the eastern one, used together with its subdialects by the Armenians in Armenia, and the western one, spoken by the Armenian diaspora whose ancestors lived in western Armenia (now the region Turkish ofEastern Anatolia) and had to abandon it due to the Armenian genocide.

This phrasebook concerns the oriental dialect, the official language of Armenia.

In Armenian, people can be addressed in a formal or informal way, as in German, French or Russian: for the formal mode the second plural person (դուք (douq)) must be used while for the infomal one it is used դու (doo).

In Armenia few people speak theEnglish while almost all speak Russian, albeit with a slightly guttural accent; learning a few expressions in Armenian, however, as well as being useful will warm even more the heart of a population in itself hospitable.

Pronunciation guide

Armenian uses a specific alphabet consisting of thirty-nine letters (not similar to the one used for theJewish) invented by Mesrop Mashtots in 405; apparently it is quite complex when compared to Latin but, unlike English and many other languages and similarly to Italian in several respects, the pronunciation of Armenian is quite phonetic, so reading should not be a problem once you have learned the language. sound of the letters but pronunciation will be a bit difficult for foreigners due to the high number of consonants present only in this language and not in the others.
