Athens is a city in Limestone County in north of Alabama. It lies between the Tennessee River and the state line too Tennessee.
background
The city of Athens was founded in 1818 and a year later it was the administrative seat of Limestone County. In 1822 the predecessor of today's Ahtens State University was established. The cotton industry has long been the city's main source of income. From the 1960s, more and more suppliers for aerospace companies settled here.

By plane
The nearest airport with direct connections from Europe is the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport(IATA: ATL) in Atlanta, Georgia. With the car you need a good 3:30 hours. The airports are closer Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport(IATA: BHM) in Birmingham, then 1:30 hours by car, and the Huntsville International Airport(IATA: HSV) in Huntsville, just under 30 minutes drive.
By train
The railway line that runs through the city is currently only used for freight transport. The nearest Amtrak train station is in Birmingham.
By bus

The runs east of the city center Interstate Highway, from the north of Nashville, Tennessee and south of Montgomery and Birmingham. The also runs parallel to the interstate US highway

Shopping with the big chains can be found along the U.S. Highways 31 and 72, a few chains, and lots of small shops are on Jefferson Street and downtown between Jefferson Street and Monroe Street and between Hobbs Street and Green Street.

The Tennessee River flows south with plenty of fishing and boating opportunities. Located around 20 kilometers to the east Huntsville with a few sights and to the north you can get there by car in about 1:30 hours Nashville, Tennessee.
