Facts about Azerbaijan

History

Once upon a time, Azerbaijan was an important part of the Silk Road between China and Europe. Although the Silk Road has long been just a memory, many sights from that time remain. During the 20th century, the country was part of the Soviet Union, but became a separate republic after the fall of communism. There are still problems with adjusting the country to more democratic and market economic conditions. The president still has enormous power and the presidency has in practice been inherited.

The locals

Climate

The climate is dry and steppe-like. It never gets very hot but the temperature stays around 20 degrees in the summer. It also does not get very cold in the winter, but usually stays above the minus line. In the southern part of Azerbaijan, the climate is almost subtropical. The summers there are clearly warmer.

Regions

Cities

  • Baku, the country's capital and one of the world's more polluted cities. You can, for example, take a boat trip on the Caspian Sea.
  • Quba, located in the northeastern part of the country. Quba is known for having its own horse breed that can handle several different gaits, e.g. tölt and pass. There are also weaving mills here.
