Time zones - Tidszoner

World time zones.

This is a list of countries, regions and territories divided according to it time zones.

Depending on where in the world you are, the locals may have their own name for their own time zone, but the best way to indicate the time difference is to compare with UTC, Universal Time, Co-ordinated. UTC corresponds to the one previously used GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, named after the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in London.

UTC is also sometimes called Z or Zulu time. A time can be written in several different ways, for example 2145Z where Z is the same as UTC. Z stands for English zero, zero, and Zulu is a way of spelling Z. The term originates from the marine system where each time zone was denoted by a letter.

Many countries, especially in Europe and North America, apply summertime. This means that during the lighter half of the year, the time is stated as one hour more than what the actual time zone would entail.

Division

Time zones east of UTC and west of the international date line are written as a certain number of hours in addition to UTC, for example UTC 4. Time zones west of UTC and east of the date line are indicated by a certain number of hours less than UTC, such as UTC-6. If you cross the date line in an easterly direction, the clocks must be reset for a whole day. The reverse is true if you cross the date line in the opposite direction. NOTE: The total time covered by the time zones covers more than 24 hours as the date line varies in a westerly and easterly direction for the date to be the same within certain archipelagos on the date line.
