background
The name "Delaware" comes from the title of the second governor of the Virginia colony, sir Thomas West, Lord De La Warr and the river named after him Delaware River.
Delaware officially bears the nickname The First State (First State), as Delaware became the first of the Thirteen Colonies to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787. There are only three counties in Delaware New Castle County, Kent County, and Sussex County, as few as in any other US state.
Although Delaware is only 100 miles long, less than 30 miles wide at its widest point, and only covers 2,489 square miles, Delaware is a surprisingly complex and diverse state. The C&D channel(Chesapeake & Delaware Canal)that cuts the state two-thirds, serves as a kind of internal Mason-Dixon line, which separates the more urban and industrialized northern part of Delaware, which is closely connected to the northern metropolis of Philadelphia, from the other rural "slower, lower" southern part, the more part of the Delmarva Peninsula and is synchronized with the southern rhythm of Maryland and Virginia.
Fitting a surprisingly diverse state, Delaware has a diverse economy that affects the kinds of things that are available to visitors. The largest city, Wilmington, is a very business-oriented city. Because of the Delaware General Corporation Law, which is very convenient for corporate managers, the majority of large US corporations are incorporated in the state of Delaware and maintain a nominal presence in the state. Generally, this presence is in Wilmington because of its Philadelphia connections. This is especially true of banks, which also benefit from Delaware's lending laws and therefore have large workforces in Wilmington. Wilmington is therefore a very business-like environment; Most downtown restaurants and bars cater to those who work in Wilmington but live elsewhere ("elsewhere" is often Pennsylvania or even New Jersey).
Unlike Wilmington, much of the state is essentially rural and much of the non-agricultural economy is tourism oriented. The Delaware coast is a relatively popular destination for local people looking to vacation in the summer. Additionally, Delaware has developed a strong craft brewing tradition with seven major breweries in the state.

getting there
The major airports are outside of the state. Due to the short distances, this is not a problem. From Philadelphia airport(IATA: PHL) you are in a good half an hour in the north of Delaware.
Wilmington is on the Northeast Corridor of the railroad and therefore accessible from Washington, Philadelphia and New York with no transfers.
