background
The state of West Virginia was formed when some southern states split off during the American Civil War (1861-1865) because they were dissatisfied with the choice of the slavery opponent Abraham Lincoln. In the then state of Virginia (especially in the northwest), however, there were many opponents of secession, which consequently split off and formed the state of West Virginia, which was accepted as a new state during the war in 1863.
Then as now, West Viriginia is a relatively poor rural state whose most important resource (and largest economic factor) is coal. However, despite or precisely because of this poverty, you can find very warm, friendly people who are open to strangers, if they respect their traditions and culture.
language
English in West Virginia can be understood as a mixture of "southern" and "northern" elements. For southerners the dialect sounds "like in the north" but for northerners it still sounds quite "southern". In general, most Germans have fewer problems with northern dialects than with those prevalent in the southern United States, so that depending on your own language level, a little getting used to is necessary. In general, however, most Americans are willing and able to speak more slowly and clearly to "outsiders" and to cut back on some of the idiosyncrasies of the dialect.
