getting there

By plane

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) is by far the largest airport in the state. It is a hub of Delta Air Lines, its regional subsidiary Delta Connection and Sun Country Airlines, therefore accessible from all parts of the USA and also directly from Europe (including Amsterdam, Paris, London). Condor only flies from Frankfurt during the summer half of the year.

There are regional airports of some importance in Duluth (DLH) and Rochester (RST), as well as small airports in Bemidji (BJI), Saint Cloud (STC), International Falls (INL), Brainerd (BRD), Hibbing (HIB) and Thief River Falls (TRF).

By train

Amtrak-served railroad stations are in Winona, Red Wing, Saint Paul, Saint Cloud, Staples, and Detroit Lakes. These are daily with the long-distance train Empire Builder which runs from Chicago to Seattle / Portland.

Duluth and Rochester are connected to the Amtrak network with coordinated bus connections (Thruway) from St. Paul / Minneapolis.

By bus

Both Minneapolis and Saint Paul are served by Greyhound.

In the street

There are three interstate highways running through Minnesota: Interstates 90 and 94 run east to west, while I-35 runs north to south. Other national and state highways complement the network.

mobility

The Amtrak long-distance train Empire Builder crosses Minnesota in a west-east direction.

Metro transit maintains a bus and light rail service between the Twin Cities and their suburbs. This includes the commuter train Northstar Line from Target Field to Big Lake, two metro (i.e., light rail), two express bus, and 132 common bus routes. The average fare for a ticket is € 1.50.

According to the League of American Bicyclists Minnesota ranks # 2 in the USA's most bike-friendly state. In particular, Minneapolis is one of, if not one of the the most bike-friendly city in the country. In the last few years a dense network of protected bike paths has been created and a public bike rental system has been set up. Minneapolis is the only city in the United States to be included in the Copenhagenize-Index listed, a worldwide ranking of particularly bicycle-friendly cities based on the Scandinavian or Dutch model.
