English has only been the official language in Louisiana since 1916. Before that, it had been French for 200 years. English is spoken almost everywhere today, but it is not uncommon to hear conversations in French in the southern and rural areas of the country.

  • In Louisiana, especially in New Orleans French immigrants brought the tradition to the 6th January, the festival of three holy Kings With. Three king cakes are baked and eaten together at king cake parties. There is the variant with puff pastry and marzipan filling, French King Cake and the brightly decorated yeast dough ring King Cake. A small baby figure is baked in as a symbol for the newborn Christ child. Whoever finds it is the king and has to invite you to the next king cake party. The cakes are in the Mardi Gras Season or Carneval Season baked from Epiphany to Shrove Tuesday and eaten at king cake parties.
  • Significant Crayfish Festival are organized by churches and other organizations as fundraising events during the spring.
