background
Mississippi is the poorest state in the United States. With the real gross national product per capita, the state was 50th in 2005. The name Mississippi is derived from Indian and means Big River. The original population were the indigenous tribes of the Natchez, Caddo, and Chickasaw. The first settlement by French settlers was at Biloxi founded. More settlers came to the British after the fall of Mississippi and the city of Natchez was founded, which was the first city ever to be founded on the territory. As can be observed in many places, the indigenous people were pushed back further and further. During the War of Independence, the area fell to Spain and tobacco production took off thanks to generous privileges such as tax exemption. As production expanded, so too did slavery. After the collapse of the tobacco trade, farmers switched to growing cotton. At the beginning of the 19th century this had become the main line of business. Mississippi became the 20th state to join the Union on December 10, 1817, only to break away as the second state on January 9, 1861. At the time, Mississippi was the largest cotton producer in the United States. The Confederate flag in today's state flag comes from the time of the Secession. In the 1960s, Mississippi was the scene of numerous race riots, and racial segregation can still be felt in many places today. Due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi has been hit by hurricanes again and again, most recently by Kathrina in the year 2005.
