History

Moldova has been controlled by several countries through the ages, including Hungary, Poland and the Ottoman Empire. The country was also a part of Romania until the Second World War. It was incorporated Soviet Union in 1944, and became an independent state only after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. After the collapse of the union, Moldova was one of the rich republics, but was hit hard by, among other things, looting. Today the country is Europe's poorest nation and since 2001 the country has had a communist regime.
