Facts about Tunisia
History
Following independence from France in 1956, President Habib Bourguiba established a one-party state. Bourguiba dominated the country for 31 years, during which he suppressed Islamic fundamentalism and introduced more rights for women than any other Arab. He was also opposed to them wearing veils. In recent years, the state has been trying to suppress pressure from groups within the country that want a more open, political system. In 2011, Bourguiba resigned as a result of the so-called Jasmine Revolution.
