Sicily[1] is an island and a region in Italy. Sicily is the largest island in The Mediterranean and is located west of the southern tip of Italy (the toe of the Italian boot). The capital is Palermo on the north coast of the island.

Planning before the trip

Sicily has often been a rather troubled island, due to its rather varied history. Reading about the country is therefore a matter of course.

Facts about Sicily

History

The early history of Sicily is characterized above all by listening to other cultures for a long time. For 500 years, until about 200 BC, the island was colonized by Greece and Carthage. Thereafter, until about 476, the island was subject to the Roman Empire before, in turn, from 476 to 1282 it was subject to the Vandals, the Byzantine Empire, the Saracens, the Normans and the German-Roman Empire. Between 1282 and 1713 Sicily belonged to Spain, 1713-1860 to Bourbon and in 1861 Sicily was finally incorporated into Italy.
