History
In the 7th or 8th century BC. the Phoenicians founded a colony on the site of the city. The city was then Ziz called (flower). The name referred to the fertile land surrounding the city. The Greeks, who owned important colonies in southern Italy, later called the city Panormos, what full port in Greek means, and what later the Latin name Panormus became.
In 408, 406 and 391 BC. Syracuse and fleets from other Greek colonies attempted to capture Palermo from the Carthaginians. Palermo, unlike many other Sicilian cities, never became a Greek city, but it was close to the border with the Greek-speaking east. In 275 BC. Pyrrhus of Epirus managed to occupy the city for a time.
The Romans conquered Palermo during the First Punic War. Palermo became an important port under Emperor Imperator Caesar Augustus and former Roman legionaries settled there.
After the Vandals established their empire in present day Tunisia in 429, they invaded Sicily several times and also conquered Palermo. The city lost its important position and fell to the Byzantine Empire in 535.
In 831 the Arabs conquered Palermo and it became one of the most important cities of the Mediterranean. Palermo again became an important port and a cultural center. The city was expanded with new neighborhoods and many buildings. Around 1050 the city had about 350,000 inhabitants. In Europe at that time, only Constantinople and Córdoba had more inhabitants.
In 1072 Normans led by Roger I of Sicily conquered the city and the Emirate of Sicily. At the beginning of the twelfth century, the city became the capital of the County of Sicily and, from 1130, of the Kingdom of Sicily. At the time of the Norman rule, many churches and palaces in the Arab-Norman style were created, such as La Zisa Castle, which resembles an Arab desert castle, and the Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti. The cultural heyday under the Normans continued after 1194, when the Hohenstaufen took over. Frederick II of Hohenstaufen gave the city a new splendor with numerous palaces and the foundation of a Sicilian school of poetry.
After the last Hohenstauf king was killed, the French Charles of Anjou took over the city and the island. Charlemagne moved the capital of his empire to Naples. Palermo lost meaning and the poverty of the population led to popular revolt in 1282 called the Sicilian Vespers. This revolt ended the reign of Charles of Anjou in Sicily. The anger of the population was directed at the French, 2,000 of whom were killed in Palermo alone.
After the revolt, Peter III of Aragon became king of Sicily. In the following centuries, several foreign dynasties would rule Sicily, but Palermo never became their seat again and the city fell into disrepair. In 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi conquered Palermo from the Kingdom of the Both Sicilies and a year later Sicily became part of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946).
Palermo was heavily damaged during World War II. Many residents from the old center moved to new neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city. After the war, the influx of people from the Sicilian countryside increased enormously. New housing estates, which have a very chaotic character, were built at a rapid pace. In the years after the war until the end of the twentieth century, the city was dominated by the Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia. The city was rocked by many murders at the time, including those of judges Falcone and Borsellino. The anti-mafia mayor Leoluca Orlando (in office 1985-2000) turned things around by fighting the mafia and its all-consuming corruption. Under Orlando, a cultural revival emerged, symbolized by the reopening of the Teatro Massimo in 1997.
Many facets of the city's rich history can still be recognized in the architectural style of buildings, such as the influence of Arabs, Normans, Romans and Byzantines.

Squares and Gates
- Piazza Pretoria (Fontana), Via Maqueda. The fountains were originally commissioned by the Spanish Viceroy of Naples Pedro Álvarez de Toledo for his Florentine villa by a number of sculptors from Florence. However, Don Pedro died before the work was completed in 1554 and his son sold the fountain to the city of Palermo in 1573. In the same year, a square was laid out in front of the Palazzo Pretorio, today the town hall, and the Dominican church of Santa Caterina, and the 644 parts of the fountain were assembled there. The fountain has a circumference of 133 meters and is 12 meters high. On the fountain are many statues of river goddesses and nymphs. Since the majority of the statues are naked, the fountain is also called the Fountain of Disgrace (Piazza della Vergogna). The fountain was completely restored at the end of the twentieth century.
- Piazza Quattro Cantic, Via Maqueda. The square with the four corners, literally translated. They are located on two main streets, Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Maqueda. The square is characterized by the fact that 4 identical palaces have been built on every corner, they depicted spring, summer, autumn and winter.

- Porta Nuova (Nieuwe poort) (Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Bus Lijn Arancione, Piazza Independenza lijn 109).
- Porta Felice (Piazza Santo Spirito, Bus lijn 107).

Safety
- Alarmnummer: 112
- Caribinieri, Corso Vittorio Emanuele 475, ☎ 39 091 588333.
- Who Sicily zegt, zegt maffia.

- Tempio Dorico in segesta (per auto: A 29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo, afslag Alcamo volg A 29 dir Palermo-Trapani, afslag: Segesta-Calatafimi), ☎ 39 0924 952356. 09:00-18:00 in de zomer, anders tot 16:00. Segesta, partly responsible for the demise of many Greek colonies, was himself in 307 BC. conquered and destroyed by Syracuse. €6,00/€3,00.
