Info

Milaan (Italië)
Milan
Position of Milan in Italy.
CoA Città di Milano.svg

Milan is financially the most important city of Italy. It is not considered the most beautiful of the Italian cities, as it was largely destroyed during the Second World War. The city has, however, made its way back into a propulsive secular business city. What distinguishes Milan for a tourist from other cities is that it is purely about lifestyle: a shopping paradise, football, opera, nightlife. Milan remains the center for Italian fashion. Fashion journalists, top models and international paparazzi attend the spring and fall presentations twice a year.

Milan is famous for its large number of historical and modern sights. The Milan Cathedral is one of the largest and most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. La Scala one of the most famous opera houses in the world, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II an old attractive passage, the Brera art gallery a place of exquisite art, the Pirelli Tower a majestic example of modernist Italian architecture from the 1960s, the San Siro a hugely famous stadium and it Castello Sforzesco a grand medieval castle. So you can see old and new monuments and own one of the world's most famous paintings: the last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Milan has an area of 181.67 km², it is located at 122 m above sea level and it has 1,344,035 (2015) inhabitants.

It borders the following municipalities: Assago, Arese, Baranzate, Bresso, Bollate, Buccinasco, Cesano Boscone, Cologno Monzese, Corsico, Cormano, Cusago, Novate Milanese, Opera, Pero, Peschiera Borromeo, Rho, Rozzano, San Donato Milanese, Segrate , Sesto San Giovanni, Settimo Milanese, Trezzano sul Naviglio and Vimodrone.

City Patron: Sant'ambrogio, December 7.

Milan has a temperate, humid climate. Milan is one of the most foggy cities in Europe. In the summer, July and August are the hottest months, in May and October there is a lot of rainfall.

Milan is believed to be around 600 BC. to have been founded by northern Italian Celts, the Insubres, whose capital it was. In 222 BC. the Romans took it. In 313 Emperor Constantine proclaimed the Edict of Milan. Under the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, Milan was the capital of the Western Roman Empire for some time. In 452, Milan was sacked by Attila and his Huns. In the late 5th century, the invaded Ostrogoths established their empire in the region. In 568 the Lombards did the same. In the 11th century, Milan led other cities to semi-independence from the Holy Roman Empire. During the outbreak of the 'Black Death' (which killed one third of the population of Europe), houses infested with the plague were bricked up together with the inhabitants. As a result, Milan is the only city in Italy and its surroundings that has been spared the plague. During the Renaissance, Milan was ruled by dukes of the Sforza and Visconti families, who employed artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante. In 1500 the French under Louis XII took the city. It was then dominated by Spain and later Austria. After the Napoleonic era, Milan became one of the main centers of Italian nationalism. In 1859 the Piedmontese liberated Lombardy with the help of the French. Two years later, the kingdom of Italy was a fact. Milan was bombed several times during World War II. In 1943 Milan was occupied by the Germans. The city was liberated by Italian partisans in April 1945, before the Allies reached it.

In the 20th century, thousands of immigrants from the poor south of Italy settled in Milan in search of a better future. This gave Milan a multicultural character.

Language

A dialect is spoken in Milan, Milanese, il milanese, but is it Italian the official language.

To do

Drinking coffee, you are in Italy after all. However, the cafes and terraces in the center are quite pricey. But at the beautiful department store La Rinascente, located to the left of the Duomo, in the basement you will find a coffee shop with espresso or bottles of San Pellegrino water for €1.00 each. Cheap, tasty and you can sit by it for a while.
