Born in Roman times, Varese enjoys the title of "garden city" thanks to the numerous villas built on the hills surrounding the city.
Also of historical interest are the six gates that in the thirteenth century allowed entry to Varese: the Rezzano gate, the Milan gate, the Regondello gate, the Motta gate, the San Martino gate and the Campagna gate. Motta market, which in the past took place on Mondays and which is one of the most important in the region. Very important for tourism is the funicular that connects Varese with the Sacro Monte.
