Varese is a city of Lombardy, capital of the homonymous province.

Varese is a pleasant hilly town located a few kilometers from the Swiss border, with a strong tourist vocation developed already at the beginning of the twentieth century when the creation of rapid connections with Milan, recreational initiatives and accommodation facilities, aimed to place it among the resorts of European appeal.

The characteristic appellation of Garden City derives from the numerous parks and gardens that are located within the municipality, mostly appurtenances of villas built there between the eighteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, first by noble families and more recently by industrialists and representatives of the high bourgeoisie, originating above all from Milan.

By plane

The closest airport is Milan-Malpensa, but there are no direct connections with Varese. You have to take the train to Busto Arsizio, Saronno or Milan and from there take the train to Varese. Milan-Linate and Milan airports can also be convenient Bergamo Orio al Serio.

By car

A8 motorway connects Varese to Milan.

On the train

There are two distinct railway lines that connect Varese to Milan: RFI with connections from Milan Porta Garibaldi and trains that pass from Busto Arsizio and Gallarate, or Ferrovienord trains from Milan Cadorna and that pass through Saronno, directed to Laveno Mombello. Both lines are served by Trenord.

Born in Roman times, Varese enjoys the title of "garden city" thanks to the numerous villas built on the hills surrounding the city.

Also of historical interest are the six gates that in the thirteenth century allowed entry to Varese: the Rezzano gate, the Milan gate, the Regondello gate, the Motta gate, the San Martino gate and the Campagna gate. Motta market, which in the past took place on Mondays and which is one of the most important in the region. Very important for tourism is the funicular that connects Varese with the Sacro Monte.
