To know
Geographical notes
Porto Valtravaglia is located 35 kilometers from the provincial capital Varese in the Valtravaglia, on the banks of the Lake Maggiore one of the largest lakes in the area. The altitude of the territory is 199 meters above sea level.
When to go
Mainly in the summer season for the lake and its beaches and village fairs.
Background
Towards the middle of the 10th century, Otto I granted the fief of Travalia to the archbishop of Milan Valperto, which from that moment became the domain of the powerful Ambrosian prelates, who exercised their spiritual and temporal jurisdiction there.
In 1438 the Duke of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti invested the noble Rusca family from Como with the fief of Travalia, an investiture which was confirmed by Francesco Sforza in the middle of the century.
In 1523 the Swiss destroyed the Rocca di Caldè following the occupation of Luino and Malcantone. In the last decades of the sixteenth century, when the Duchy of Milan had long since entered the Spanish orbit, the lands of Valtravaglia passed to Count Ruggero Marliani, after being Borromean for a decade (from 1543 to 1553) and then returning to the Rusca- Lonati.
Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Porto was enriched with beautiful buildings built by the noble and high-bourgeois families of the time, almost all located along the current Via Roma and near the port. In 1759 Felice Cioja and Carlo Mellerio founded a factory in Porto specialized in the production of glass plates, carafes and crystal glasses. In 1774 40 men and 49 women worked there, as well as numerous children. Part of the workforce came from distant countries and gave rise to families whose name recalls their origin: Griner, Asciamprener, Klingly.
In the Napoleonic era, the well-known economist Melchiorre Gioia affirmed that the purity of the glass of Porto was very famous, slightly lower than that of Bohemia. The factory then passed into the hands of the Minetti family, improving in quality and quantity, employing 170 people.
In 1901, on the occasion of the Varesina Exposition, the Porto company was brilliantly present. In those years it was owned by the Lucchini family, of Milanese origins, but firmly linked to Porto Valtravaglia. A member of the family, Angelo, was one of the founders of the Banca Popolare di Luino in 1885 and for a long time also the mayor of Porto. In 1928 the Province of Varese was born and also the Valtravaglia experienced new impetus with the construction of the Laveno - Luino road. In 1928 the union of the municipalities of Muceno and Musadino, autonomous up to that date, was also carried out in Porto, thus forming a single municipality. Currently, apart from a substantial percentage of frontier workers, employment is aimed at the tertiary sector towards the cities of Varese and Milan. Locally there are many artisan and commercial realities even if tourism, Italian and foreign (in particular German), has a certain importance in the economy of the municipality.
