To know
It is the main center ofAlto Milanese and, with the cities of Legnano is Gallarate, form the conurbation of Olona.
Geographical notes
The territory of Busto Arsizio is at the northern limit of the Po Valley, in the alluvial area of the upper plain, south of the Varesine Prealps. It is located in the affected area morainic plateaus of the Olona Valley. The location of the first settlement is not accidental: it was in fact on an alternative route to the Sempione road, known as the "Milan road", which connected Milan with Lake Maggiore. The municipal house is located 228.18 meters above sea level, as indicated on a facade of the Town Hall. The altitudes of the lowest and highest points are respectively 194 and 244 m a.s.l., for a difference in height of 50 meters.
In the past, the Bustese territory was crossed by two streams, the Rile and the Tenore, now buried for most of their courses. The municipality of Busto Arsizio has three historic centers: the first, the main one, develops within the rectangle delimited by piazza Manzoni, via Giuseppe Mazzini, via Daniele Crespi, via Fratelli d'Italia, via Andrea Zappellini, via Alessandro Volta and piazza san Michele. The other two are those of the districts (once autonomous municipalities) of Sacconago and Borsano, both located in the southern area of the municipality of Busto Arsizio.

The climate of Busto Arsizio is continental. Winters are cold and have many frosty days. Summers are hot and muggy. The phenomenon of fog is frequent, although less and less.
Background
According to some hypotheses, Busto Arsizio had Ligurian origins. The urban distribution of the city of Busto Arsizio demonstrates the subsequent presence of the Romans. Known in the early Middle Ages for the tanning of skins, the first mention of the city dates back to 922, the year in which the name of the locus it is mentioned in some documents of notaries. By decree of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo, on 4 April 1583 Busto Arsizio, then under the dominion of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti, was detached from the Vicariate of Seprio and placed at the head of what until then was the Parish of Olgiate Olona with its own podestà .
The origins of what was once a textile center of primary importance are to be found in the Middle Ages: in 1375 "almost every house beats a loom", as testified a few centuries later by the historian Crespi Castoldi in his history of Busto Arsizio (De Oppido Busti Relationes).
In the second half of the nineteenth century the development of the village began outside the defensive walls, along the strà Balon (current Corso XX Settembre) and the Garottola road (now Via Mameli). On 30 October 1864 Busto Arsizio obtained the title of city in the Kingdom of Italy. Thanks to the activity of Enrico dell'Acqua, at the end of the nineteenth century it acquired the dual nature of a cotton and mechanical city, a situation that ensured its fortune and well-being for a long time, as well as the nickname of "Manchester of Italy".
Many entrepreneurs built their villas in the style in vogue in the early twentieth century, Liberty style, which is still an important part of the Bustocco architectural heritage today. Today Busto Arsizio is a modern industrial and commercial center of over 80,000 inhabitants which is located in one of the most industrialized areas of Europe, theAlto Milanese.
How to orient yourself
The main accesses to the city consist of the two stations (both in a fairly central position) and the exit Busto Arsizio of the A8 motorway north of the city, which allows you to enter the town via the SS33 del Sempione or from viale Repubblica and via Quintino Sella.
The main points of reference are the Sempione course and the Milan-Gallarate-Varese railway. Their intersection takes place precisely in Busto Arsizio, in an important road junction called "the Cinque Ponti". Also in Busto Arsizio, the Milan-Gallarate-Varese railway (which runs from south-east to north-west) intersects the Milan-Novara railway (which runs from east to west and cuts the city horizontally).
Other key points of Busto Arsizio are, in addition to the three historical centers, the hospital (to the north, near the "Cinque Ponti"), the monumental cemetery (to the west, along the SS527) and the Buon Gesù locality. partly under the municipality of Olgiate Olona and constitutes the area in which the municipalities of Busto Arsizio, Olgiate Olona and Castellanza at the intersection between the Simplon SS33, corso XX Settembre (one of the main bustocche streets) and viale Don Giovanni Minzoni (an important road axis of Castellanza).
Neighborhoods
The four original districts are those of the three historical centers: the real center of Busto Arsizio (districts of San Giovanni to the east and San Michele to the west) and the former autonomous municipalities of Sacconago and Borsano (south of the Milan-Novara railway ). In the downtown area there are the three main churches (sanctuary of Santa Maria di Piazza, basilica of San Giovanni Battista and church of San Michele Arcangelo) as well as numerous minor churches and votive chapels, as well as the two civic museums. It is in this district that the town hall, the classical and artistic high schools of the city, the large municipal swimming pool and the streets dedicated to shopping are located. In Sacconago there is the new church of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul and the old church of the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul, as well as the new industrial area and the Angelo Borri sports center dedicated to athletics. In the district of Borsano, smaller in size, there is the third church dedicated to the Saints Apostles Peter and Paul of the city and that of Sant'Antonio da Padova.
Other important districts are those of Beata Giuliana (to the north), Madonna Regina (to the west), Frati (to the east) and Sant'Edoardo (between the center and Sacconago). In Beata Giuliana, a district crossed by via Quintino Sella and viale Stelvio and bounded by the SS33 del Sempione and via Gioacchino Rossini, there is the main school complex of the city: the comprehensive Sandro Pertini institute which houses kindergarten, primary school and secondary school first degree in a single complex in via Gioacchino Rossini with adjoining soccer field, athletics track and gym. Two other elementary schools find space in this district, as well as the Enrico Tosi Technical Commercial Institute. In the northernmost area of the district is the Poveri farmhouse (now abandoned) which, in 1427, gave birth to the blessed Giuliana Puricelli, from whom the district takes its name.
The Madonna Regina district (separated from that of Beata Giuliana by the smaller Redentore district) houses the Monumental Cemetery and numerous historic farmhouses, more or less large, almost all of which today are incorporated into more recent constructions. It is separated from the Sacconago district by the SS527 and the Milan-Novara railway, as well as by a large area intended for cultivation.
The Friars district, which takes its name from the convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is located east of the center, along the Via XX Settembre which connects Busto Arsizio to Olgiate Olona, Castellanza and, further south-east, Legnano. In the northern area of the district is Piazza Volontari della Libertà, which is overlooked by the Busto Arsizio railway station.
The Sant'Edoardo district is one of the most populous in the city. It is located south of the Milan-Novara railway and north-east of Sacconago. It takes its name from the parish church, dedicated to Saint Edward the king and confessor. During the Resistance it was the scene of various clandestine operations led by the then coadjutor Don Ambrogio Gianotti.
In addition to the eight mentioned, the other districts are those of Sant'Anna, San Giuseppe, Santi Apostoli and Santa Croce.

How to keep in touch
Post office
Busto Arsizio has numerous post offices, the largest of which is located in via Mazzini. There is also one inside the Ferrovie dello Stato station.
Around
Castelseprio Archaeological Park (institutional site[link not working]). Located north of Busto Arsizio, it can be reached by car taking the SP2, crossing the town of Fagnano Olona up to the intersection with via Monterosa in Cairate), where you have to turn right and then turn left onto via Dante Alighieri. Continue on the SP42 following the signs for Castelseprio and subsequently for the archaeological area, located at the end of via Castelvecchio.
The archaeological site consists of the ruins of the homonymous fortified settlement and its village, as well as the nearby church of Santa Maria foris portas. Of the same archaeological unicum is the Monastery of Torba, which is however managed by the FAI. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 26, 2011, the park was established after the rediscovery of the site by Gian Piero Bognetti in the 1950s.
Itineraries
Along Olona and Valmorea railway. TO Castellanza the historic Valmorea railway begins, which runs alongside the Olona river until it enters the Rio Lanza stream. It continues along this tributary up to the border with the Switzerland, then continuing up to Mendrisio. The northern section of the railway has been recovered and is used for tourism purposes, while the southern section has special trains lump sum. From Olgiate Olona a cycle path starts which runs alongside the railway and the river Olona up to Castiglione Olona, passing by fields, floodplains, old stations and large industries, such as the Cartiera Vita Mayer in Cairate, which once constituted the main source of employment in the Olona Valley. There are also interesting artifacts made for the proper functioning of the railway, but you can also see small churches and chapels. Perfect for spending a day on a bike or for a walk inside the Medio Olona Park.
