Olgiate Olona is a city of Lombardy.
To know
Geographical notes
Olgiate Olona is located mainly flat, with the exception of the eastern area where, in the presence of the Olona river, there are significant differences in height generated over time by the river itself. It is part of the territory ofAlto Milanese and, together with Busto Arsizio, Gallarate, Legnano and other smaller neighboring municipalities form the Olona conurbation.
When to go
The ideal period to visit Olgiate Olona is from April to October, to be able to enjoy, in spring and summer, the green banks of the Olona river and its long cycle path, as well as the numerous local festivals and celebrations. In autumn not to be missed is the autumn festival that involves the entire historic center of Olgiate Olona.
Background
Of probable Roman origins, the town of Olgiate Olona was in the Middle Ages at the head of the parish of the same name, whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction it maintained until the year 1583, the civil one until 1784. It was a religious and administrative reference point for the Seprio county. and, from 1395, within the Duchy of Milan.
The original village was characterized by a castle that was probably demolished in the 12th century. In 1583 Archbishop Carlo Borromeo decided to transfer provost and canonate to the nearby village of Busto Arsizio, which had become much richer and more populous. Reduced to a simple parish of 700 individuals linked to agriculture, decimated by the plague of 1631, Olgiate remained in a stalemate for two centuries, becoming a fief of the Alessandri and then of the Prata in 1709, noble families who left no evidence in the country, where they never resided.
In the seventeenth century the Molas stood out, in the nineteenth century the Greppi, the Restelli and the Tovo. The development of weaving, dyeing and paper mills in the Olona Valley and the opportunity for an international rail connection in addition to the Sempione line motivated the derivation from the Ferrovie Nord Milano in 1926 of the Castellanza - Mendrisio section, called Ferrovia della Valmorea, totally abandoned as passenger service in 1952 and later also as freight transport.
In 1959 Olgiate Olona was the setting for one of the greatest disasters of civil aviation in Italy: the Olgiate Olona air disaster, which led to the death of 70 people of 8 different nationalities.
How to orient yourself
The municipality of Olgiate Olona is cut in half by the A8 motorway which runs from north-west to south-east. The eastern border is made up of the Olona river, while the southern one by the Simplon state road (SS33).
The historic center is located between the highway and the river, occupying the eastern portion of the municipal territory. On the opposite side, to the west, there is a district occupied entirely by large shops. The north-western area is mainly occupied by agricultural fields.
Neighborhoods
Olgiate Olona is divided into three districts: Centro, Gerbone and Buon Gesù (the latter is an administrative fraction of the municipality). The first is, as already mentioned, to the east. The Gerbone is located in the central area of the municipal area, while the Buon Gesù occupies the southern area.
