Saronno is a city of Lombardy.

To know

Saronno is part of the province of Varese. Among the large municipalities of the province, Saronno is the most densely populated. It is an important industrial center.

Geographical notes

The city is located in the territory ofAlto Milanese, at the intersection between the provinces of Milan, Como, Varese and Monza and Brianza, without being closely linked to any of the capitals. A considerable part of the population gravitates to Milan for work or study reasons, but the city also enjoys a life of its own, in which the inhabitants of the neighboring municipalities also participate, to which the rich choice of high schools also contributes.

Saronno is crossed by the Lura stream, which originates in the territory of the Municipality of Bizzarone and flows into the Olona, on the outskirts of Milan. Its iridescent black / purplish color is due to the industrial discharges of the lower Como area. The watercourse of the Lura that flows through the city is now largely covered. Some green areas make up the southernmost part of the Lura Park, a fringed collection of protected areas born from recent redevelopment and arboreal repopulation.

The best time to go to Saronno is at the beginning of May when the Sunday demonstration "Saronno una volta" is organized by the associations of the city. Over one hundred associations present themselves with stalls and stands in the pedestrian center. On the occasion there is also an exhibition of costumes, vehicles and instruments from the early twentieth century. In summer, the "white night" is organized instead.

As far as religious events are concerned, the feast of the Transport of the Holy Crucifix is noteworthy, which takes place from 1734 to the fourth Sunday in October with a solemn procession. At the end of March, since 1577, the feast of the Vow to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli takes place which provides for the offering of wax by the Mayor as fulfillment of the ancient Marian vow.

The climate is continental with cold winters and many frosty days. The phenomenon of fog is becoming less and less frequent. Summers are hot, humid and moderately rainy.

Background

The first and oldest document in which Saronno is cited is a notarial charter from 796. Before reaching the definitive denomination of Saronno, over the centuries the city has taken on various denominations which can be found through historiographical documentation. In chronological order, Saronno was called Solomno (year 903), Serogno (year 1150), Sorogno (XII century), Serono (XIII century) and immediately after Sarono.

These name changes are a perfect testimony of a phenomenon that is found with great frequency in the Lombard dialects west of the Adda, including the Saronnese dialect: rhotacism, that is the change of / l /, especially if intervocalic, in / r /, indicated by the great linguist Clemente Merlo as one of the most characteristic effects of the deep and ancient Ligurian substratum.

Saronno in the Middle Ages was part of the Contado del Seprio and therefore of the Duchy of Milan. To Cecilia Gallerani, the Lady with an Ermine of Leonardo da Vinci, Ludovico il Moro donated the revenues of the Saronnese area.

Fascism made Saronno an aggregative center of its district, annexing Origgio, Uboldo and Gerenzano, unions then abolished with the Liberation.

The Lombard territory was thus enriched with a new Marian sanctuary which soon became an important destination for devotion and which was enriched over time with many art treasures.
