Background
There are archaeological evidences that attest the human presence in the area since pre-Roman times with the presence of Ligurian and Celtic tribes. With the Roman expansion the town became part of Cisalpine Gaul taking the name of Olegium Carulfum and the urban structure undergoes the typical transformation to a Roman plan based on a cardo and decumano still identifiable today in the routes of via Gramsci and corso Matteotti.
With the fall of the Roman Empire, the city ends up under the Lombard domination. During the early Middle Ages, it first passed under the control of the Holy Roman Empire, then of the county of Biandrate and finally of Novara. In the XII she was granted the status of burgum. In 1301 it was conquered by the Milanese under the guidance of Gian Galeazzo Visconti; with the Sforza in Milan, the city regains autonomy but remains under the influence of the Lombard city until the Treaty of Aachen in 1748 which hands it over to the Savoy dominions. With the unification of Italy, the city returned to the province of Novara and the Piedmont region, following its historical events.
