History
In 52 BC. Julius Caesar conquered Paris, which was conquered by the Romans Lutetia Parisiorum was named. It owes its name to the people de Parisii, which settled on the islands in the Seine. These stations are headends. This means that changing trains in Paris often means that you have to travel from one station to another by metro. On presentation of a through train ticket, a so-called Contre-marque can be used to make a free connection between the stations with the RER (not with the metro!) (or with a change in Châtelet-Les Halles), for example from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon (RER B/D) or from Gare du Nord/Gare de l'Est (Magenta) to Gare St. Lazare (RER E). These tickets are almost never issued in Paris, at other French stations you will almost always receive these on presentation of the train ticket or E-Ticket. The journey may not be interrupted in Paris (read: the journey must be continued within the same 24 hours).
Other major train stations near Paris are Marne-la-Vallee - Chessy (TGV and RER station for Disneyland Paris) and the station at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Trains to and from Paris
- TER - The regional trains (Train Express Regionale), the cheapest tickets, although the prices are variable at the time of departure (and also on the day of departure). TER is sometimes slower and stops at almost all stations. TER tickets purchased at the train station are valid for two months from the date indicated on the ticket, as long as you travel in the correct travel period ("période bleue", the cheapest, "période blanche", for high demand hours). There is no seat reservation, so come early enough or you may have to travel without a seat;
- TGV - Train a Grande Vitesse, drive very often to the southeast Nice (5-6 hours), Marseille (3 hours) and Avignon (2.5 hours), east of Geneva (3 hours) or Lausanne , Switzerland , Dijon (1 hour and 15 minutes) and Strasbourg (1 hour 45 minutes), southwestern Bordeaux (3 hours), west of Rennes (2 hours) and the north of Lille (1 hour). Reservations are required;
- Thalys is the high-speed train for daily connections between Netherlands, Belgium and Paris. - ICE - German high-speed trains, providing most services between Paris and Frankfurt operate;
- Intercites - A bundling of the former categories Intercités, Teoz and lunea. By public transport
Suburban rail traffic consists of two systems. It RERnetwork mostly serves the densely populated suburbs and suburbs. The trains connect two sides of Paris by tunnel, so that people from the suburbs can get off in the heart of Paris without having to change trains. Net als vele steden is Parijs inmiddels ook aan het uitgroeien tot een echte fietsstad. Al ruim 2 jaar functioneert het grijze fietsenplan Vélib (vélo libre). Parijs heeft duizenden fietsen voor dit project beschikbaar gesteld en overal in de stad zie je dan ook zilvergrijze fietsen voorbijgaan. Na Vélib zijn er ook nog meerdere bedrijven actief geworden in Parijs: aanbieder Mobike van oranje fietsen en meerdere aanbieders van elektrische stepjes. Bij deze bedrijven mag je je fiets/step overal achterlaten waar deze mogen staan en hoeven ze dus niet in een speciale standplaats te worden gezet. Kenmerkend voor Mobike en de stepjes is dat je een app op je telefoon nodig hebt om ze te kunnen gebruiken.
Naast dit fietsenplan zijn er de afgelopen jaren honderden kilometers aan fietspaden aangelegd in de stad en op zondag zijn sommige wegen zelfs autovrij. Natuurlijk is een dag fietsen in Parijs wat anders dan in een doorsnee dorp in Nederland. Wanneer je er op eigen initiatief op uit trekt zorg dan dat je wel de nodige voorbereidingen treft. Zorg in ieder geval voor een duidelijke kaart van Parijs, want de kans om te verdwalen is groot. The Paris Mapguide geschreven door Michael Middleditch is een boekje met een zeer overzichtelijk stratenplan waarin elk straatje en steegje staat beschreven.

Parisien d'un jour, [1]. Een organisatie die uit ongeveer 130 vrijwilligers bestaat die toeristen in groepjes van maximum 6 personen in hun wijk of buurt rondleiden. Ideaal voor personen die al verschillende malen Parijs bezocht hebben en eens iets anders willen zien. Vooraf inschrijven is geen overbodige luxe want er is veel belangstelling voor deze alternatieve manier van toerisme. Bovendien zijn deze vrijwilligers bijzonder vriendelijk en niet zelden wordt er na de wandeling in een lokaal café nog één en ander besproken.

Food
Het is in Parijs, net als in heel Frankrijk, heel normaal om gratis kraanwater bij je eten te vragen. Maar ook voor een lunchmenu inclusief een glaasje wijn kun je vaak al in de prijsklasse 10 à 15 Euro terecht; dit is met name het geval in de arrondissementen 10 t/m 20, waar veel kleinere kantoren zijn die niet over een eigen kantine beschikken. Verder is de sandwich ook heel populair, als gerecht in een restaurant of, om al lopend of zittend op een bankje in een park op te eten. Bedenk wel dat het geen sandwich is in Engelse stijl (2 plakjes brood met beleg ertussen), maar een overlangs doorgesneden stuk stokbrood met beleg. Natuurlijk is het ook mogelijk zeer duur (tot wel honderden euro's per persoon) te eten in een restaurant met 3 Michelinsterren, maar daarvoor moet je dan wel lang van tevoren (soms maanden!) reserveren.

In de Parijse cafés is het verboden om te roken. Binnen kost een drankje vaak minder dan op het terras (dit geldt voor heel Frankrijk). Staand aan de bar zijn de drankjes nog goedkoper.

Kamperen kan je vlak aan de Seine kort bij het Bois de Boulogne. Camping Indigo Paris. Metro Lijn 1 en bus 244 zijn beide vlakbij.

Safety
In Parijs moet je toch wel oppassen, net als in iedere andere drukke plaats. Vooral in Montmartre (hou je rugzak of andere bagage constant in het oog. Zeker als iemand je iets vraagt, want dan is er ondertussen misschien wel een ander spullen uit je rugzak aan het stelen) en in de metro (hou je geld en wat van waarde is, op een onopvallende plaats, die je goed in het oog kan houden, en pas op bij het aanschuiven bij de loketjes: ze snijden je rugzak zo open)! Maar natuurlijk moet je niet overdrijven en niet de hele dag lang alleen maar naar je rugzak staren. Geniet van je bezoek!
In januari en november 2015 zijn er aanslagen gepleegd in Parijs, gevolg hiervan is dat er veel politie aanwezig is op de straten en bij toeristische attracties, maar blijf ook alert naar welke wijk je bijv. gaat, enkele banlieue's zijn gevaarlijk.
