The city of Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements, each with its own mayor and political council and its own character. The naming of the arrondissements is simply a number from 1 to 20. The 1st is in the heart of the city and from there the numbering unfolds in the shape of a snail's shell. But are you in the 4th arrondissement and you ask a police officer the way to a place of interest in the 3rd then there's a good chance he won't be able to help you. Each district has its own article in this guide.

History
In 52 BC. Julius Caesar conquered Paris, which was conquered by the Romans Lutetia Parisiorum was named. It owes its name to the people de Parisii, which settled on the islands in the Seine. This was strategically a smart move, in addition, there were trade routes that passed through this place. This made it possible to grow in prosperity.
In the 13th century, the right bank of the Seine, which had been marshy until then, was drained. Construction of the Louvre and Notre-Dame also began in the 13th century.
From 1420, Paris was occupied by the Englishmen. When the occupation was over, a new building frenzy arose. Results of this are the Pont Neuf and the Luxembourg garden (le Jardin du Luxembourg).
On July 14, 1789, the storming of the Bastille took place, which heralded the French Revolution.
During the reign of Napoleon III, Paris was thoroughly remodeled by Georges-Eugène Haussmann. At that time, the great boulevards were built.
May 28, 1871, was a black day in the history of Paris, when 20,000 Parisians were killed in an uprising.

On presentation of a through train ticket, a so-called Contre-marque can be used to make a free connection between the stations with the RER (not with the metro!) (or with a change in Châtelet-Les Halles), for example from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon (RER B/D) or from Gare du Nord/Gare de l'Est (Magenta) to Gare St. Lazare (RER E). These tickets are almost never issued in Paris, at other French stations you will almost always receive these on presentation of the train ticket or E-Ticket. The journey may not be interrupted in Paris (read: the journey must be continued within the same 24 hours).
Other major train stations near Paris are Marne-la-Vallee - Chessy (TGV and RER station for Disneyland Paris) and the station at Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Suburban rail traffic consists of two systems. It RERnetwork mostly serves the densely populated suburbs and suburbs. The trains connect two sides of Paris by tunnel, so that people from the suburbs can get off in the heart of Paris without having to change trains. The RER trains run with a high frequency, so that the rail network is often regarded as a metro system. Especially the RER A and B are busy, with 1.2 million and 900,000 travelers per day respectively. In addition to the RER network, there is also the transilen-network. This system departs from the major Paris terminal stations and travels from there to the far suburbs and countryside. There are eight lines, although the lines are more like a network with branches. The trains run at a lower frequency than the RER, because the demand for public transport is lower on the routes where Transilien trains run.

In the coming years, the Paris underground will be expanded with the name Grand Paris Express (M15, M17, M18 and M19) this involves a cost of 30 billion euros.
The oldest metro stations are in an ornate Art-Deco style.
The newer stations have a sleeker design and the word Metropolitain, or Metro for short, with white letters on a red background
The red signs with white letters are illuminated at night.
And also these newest style metro entrances are illuminated.
On the platforms you will find overviews of the Metro, RER, Tramway and bus network.
Downstairs you usually have two platforms.
But there is also one central platform.
More and more stations have a screen that only opens when a metro is present.
Stations are sometimes true works of art.

RER - Réseau Express Regional
The RER, also known as the 'fast metro', connects the suburbs and suburbs with the center of the city of Paris. The trains of the RER use a four letter code and no name as destination, see here for an example.

To do
