Lausanne, the capital of the Swiss Cantons Vaud is at the northernmost point of the Lake Geneva (Lac Léman). and with almost 130,000 inhabitants it is the fourth largest city in Switzerland after Zurich, Geneva and Basel, but ahead of Bern. It is the host of the International Olympic Committee, which is why it is often referred to as the capital of sport, no wonder the residents of Lausanne are fit, as their city is built up and down the hill. Since Lausanne is home to two universities, it is one of the most important educational locations in Switzerland. With its numerous, often extraordinary museums, it is an important cultural location for French-speaking Switzerland and all of Switzerland. It is also an important traffic junction and gateway to the Alpine canton Valais. Thanks to Lake Geneva, Lausanne itself has a bit of a Mediterranean feel and the Ouchy lake district invites you to stroll. In contrast, there is the old town, which is the real center of the city and where you can shop very well.

background

Mayor Davel
Monument to Major Davel
Mayor Davel, with full name Jean Daniel Abraham Davel was born on October 20, 1670 in Morrens VD. He was a Swiss rebel and is now considered the Vaudois folk hero par excellence. He was appointed Mayor in 1712 by the Bernese (Vaud was then part of Bern). Davel felt called by God to free his fatherland - the Vaud - from the Bernese. On March 31, 1723, he rode into Lausanne quite unexpectedly, assembled the city council there and presented a manifesto. In this manifesto, the Bernese were accused of a number of errors. He explained his plan to liberate Vaud. In the city council, however, he found no support for this matter and the incident was reported directly to Bern, whereupon Davel was arrested. During the investigation, Davel was tortured, but continued to insist that the liberation of Vaud was a divine inspiration and that he had no complicity. Nevertheless, he was found guilty and beheaded April 24, 1723 in Lausanne-Vidy. In the 19th century this story was then highly sterilized and he became a Vaudois folk hero.
  • There was a settlement on the hill of Lausanne as far back as the Stone Age, but the real history of the city only began during the Roman era. The settlement Lausanna was located between the hill and the lake, in the area of the present-day village of Vidy. In the Middle Ages, it was more of a fortress, and its increasing prosperity and importance was based on its location on the important north-south routes of Italy to the North Sea. To the north of the St. Bernard Pass, it was the first larger city, and at the same time it was an important episcopal center. In 1536 the Bernese conquered what had been up until then from the Counts of Savoy ruled the city to secure its southwestern border. This era ended with the invasion of Napoléon Bonaparte in 1798. In 1803 Lausanne became the capital of the canton Vaud.
  • The region on the northwest coast of Lake Geneva from Lausanne to Vevey becomes Lavaux called. At the lake between Lausanne and Montreux is the Vaudois Riviera. Part of this riviera also belongs to the Lavaux. For 150 years it was the second home for numerous writers, painters and musicians. This is where the Shelleys and Lord Byron lived (it is said that Frankenstein was written here). Other personalities would be Ernest Hemingway or Charlie Chaplin, who has been in Vevey lived.
  • As expected, the high student population makes for a lively night and art life, especially in the Flon district. Numerous high-class restaurants and two dozen museums await the visitor, including the Olympic Museum and the unusual Collection de l'Art Brut. Those interested in architecture should be made aware that the best preserved Gothic cathedral in Switzerland is located in the old town.
  • In Lausanne will French spoken. Even if you don't have a perfect command of French or only speak sparsely, many people from French-speaking Switzerland enjoy it if you at least try. Many residents come from other parts of the country and therefore also speak Swiss German and Italian; However, these languages are not generally understood. As in Geneva has also been here English established as a second language.

By boat

Course ships

Ships operate from both the French and the Swiss side of the Lake Geneva to Lausanne. Departure ports are mostly Evian-les-Bains, Montreux, Geneva and many smaller places on the shore of the lake. Cruises with lunch or dinner are very popular with tourists. Most ships travel at a leisurely pace and are therefore the slowest way to get to Lausanne. In summer the ships' timetable is relatively good, but in autumn and spring the timetable is reduced and in winter there are almost no ships.

Ferries

Passenger ferries operated by the CGN operate year-round from Lausanne-Ouchy under the name NaviMobilité directly across the lake to Évian-les-Bains (line N1) and Thonon-les-Bains (line N2). They mainly serve the commuter traffic of working cross-border commuters and therefore operate very early in the morning from Monday to Friday and this until late in the evening. Compared to the scheduled ships of the CGN, they have their own, somewhat more expensive tariff system for single trips, offer a little less comfort but have slightly shorter journey times than the scheduled ships.

Public transport

In Lausanne there are numerous bus and two metro lines with which pretty much every point in Lausanne can be reached. The REV (Réséau Express Vaudois) is Lausanne's S-Bahn, which connects the municipalities in the surrounding area. There are currently 7 such lines. Transports publics de la région Lausannoise is primarily responsible for urban transport tl (Information only in French and English). On the website one can also find Network maps of Lausanne. The trains of the REV are not part of the tl, but of the tariff association

Rail-bound means of transport

REV / S-Bahn

Lausanne has 7 suburban trains

  • S1 Yverdon-les-Bains - Cossonay - Renens - Lausanne - Pully - Lutry - Vevey - Montreux - Villeneuve
  • S2 Vallorbe - Croy-Romainmôtier - Cossonay - Renens - Lausanne - Puidoux-Chexbres - Palézieux

  • S21 Lausanne - Puidoux-Chexbres - Palézieux - Moudon - Payerne
  • S31 Vevey - Chexbres-Village - Puidoux-Chexbres

The S31 is the only one that doesn't touch Lausanne. All of these S-Bahn trains run every hour, but certain lines are developed in such a way that they run every half hour, e.g. between Lausanne and Villeneuve, or even every 20 minutes, as between Palézieux, The express trains also help here, as does the half-hourly service between Yverdon-les-Bains and Lausanne. Even after Morges there is a dense cycle.

Métrolinien & Lausanne – Echallens – Bercher Railway

At the 2 Lausanne Flon train stationBahnhof Lausanne Flon in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaBahnhof Lausanne Flon im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsBahnhof Lausanne Flon (Q672214) in der Datenbank Wikidata (Flon metro station), the three rail-bound local transport systems of Lausanne meet. These are the Métrolinie M1, which starts here and leads via the University in Dorigny and EPFL to Renens, but also the Lausanne – Echallens – Bercher Railway (LEB), which also begins here. The M2 metro line also has a stop here. The SBB train station Lausanne (French: Lausanne CFF) and the boat station in Ouchy are connected to this central transfer station with this line. Lausanne operates the shortest fully automated metro line in the world. The M2 runs in a north-south direction from Ouchy (lake) to Epalinges, the lower part of which uses the route of the former cogwheel railways Lausanne – Ouchy (LO) and Lausanne – Gare (LG) and also affects the SBB train station.

Bus routes

Bus routes are sometimes 2-3 minutes late due to traffic. The current departure times of the lines are indicated at each stop and can be easily seen on the display board and timetable. The main stop for the city bus lines is Place St-François, more than 10 bus lines stop here. Lausanne Flon train station is only 5 minutes away from this square. From Lausanne Flon train station, lifts themselves lead to the bridge above, where the city bus routes stop. Many bus routes in Lausanne are operated by trolleybuses, hence the many overhead lines and the sometimes rather older buses, as trollybuses have a much longer lifespan than petrol-powered buses.

Car & other private transport

L'escalier du Marché

Driving in Lausanne is one of those things. The driving style is, let's call it "sporty". It is driven fast, braked a lot, honked even more, and you often see very "interesting" overtaking maneuvers. People like to swear from time to time. In addition, there is a lot of traffic and it is not really fast moving forward. Parking spaces are available, but they are rather rare, occupied and usually subject to a charge (2-2.50 Fr / hour)

on foot

Especially in the old town it is worth walking. This is the best way to get to know the city and find many good restaurants, cozy places and beautiful architecture. In addition, the next bus or metro stop is not far away if you are exhausted. What to keep in mind: Lausanne is a city built up and down the slope, on several hills. The streets are sometimes steep and there are stairs everywhere; bridges do not always lead from hill to hill. Especially people who are restricted in their movement should take this into account.

Tourist Attractions

Bundesgericht

Post

Vorwahl

The Vorwahl der Switzerland lautet 41. Jene von Lausanne 021. Wenn man vom Ausland anruft muss man zuerst 041 einstellen und nachher nur noch 21. Die 0 fällt weg. Hier ein Nummerbeispiel: 41 21 xxx xx xx.
