Morges is a Swiss City in the canton Vaud.

background

The city is located east of the river of the same name, Morges Lake Geneva, around 10 kilometers west of Lausanne. It is also the district capital of the district Morges.

In 1286, Ludwig I of Savoy commissioned the construction of the Castle of Morges. At the same time, a market town was founded, previously there were only a few individual farms. The market was deliberately founded in competition with Lausanne. The first written mention of the village was in 1297 when the city officially received its market rights. From 1359 to 1536 Morges was temporarily the residence of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy. When the Bernese conquered the area in 1536, Morges became the capital of the bailiwick of the same name, and the official residence was established in the castle. In the 17th and 18th centuries Morges became an important trading center and was the location of the Bernese Lake Geneva fleet. For this reason, a nautical school was founded in 1672. From 1691 to 1696, on behalf of Bern, a 16,000 m² port for the navy was built, for which, among other things, parts of the city wall of Saint-Prex were used. Morges became a district capital with the establishment of Vaud.
