background

In addition to the town of Saint-Prex, the districts of Beaufort and Les Iles also belong to the municipality of Saint-Prex.

The Saint-Prex area has been populated for a very long time. The remains of a Neolithic settlement were discovered near Fraidaigue. The necropolis with around 30 graves is dated to the late Bronze Age. There are also traces of Roman times and the early Middle Ages. The place was first mentioned in a document in 885 under the name Sanctus Prothasius. At this time, a church is also mentioned, in which the bishop (of Lausanne) Prothasius is said to have been buried in the middle of the 7th century. The current name of the city is due to this Holy Prothais (Saint Prothais). The area belonged to the cathedral chapter of during the High Middle Ages Lausanne. A market has been held in Saint-Prex since 1223. In 1234 the city received city rights and was fortified, mainly for strategic reasons. In 1358, Saint-Prex came under the rule of the Counts of Savoy, and when the Berne conquered Vaud in 1536, the town came under the administration of Morges and thus lost their independence. Because of this addiction, it lost its meaning. The city wall was used in the 17th century to build the war port of Morges. Since the founding of Vaud, it has belonged to this canton and is still part of the Morges district.

The Saint-Prex glass factory, founded in 1911 by Henri Cornaz and today the largest glass factory in Switzerland, is not insignificant in economic terms. It mainly produces green glass bottles.
