Villeneuve is very conveniently located on the Lake Geneva. The German name is Neuenstadt on Lake Geneva but is no longer used today. In addition to the village of Villeneuve, the municipality also includes the villages Grandchamp, Le Crêt, Valeyre and Plan CudreyIn the Celtic times the settlement Pennelucos was located here, it was still inhabited in the Roman times. At that time it was on the important trade route that led from Aventicum (Avenches) here, and then continued via Octodurum (Martigny) and the Great Saint Bernard to Italy. The first documentary mention of the settlement at that time took place in 1005. In 1214, Count Thomas I of Savoy founded a new settlement under the name Villanova Chillionis (la ville neuve de Chillon) in 1214, and furnished it with a letter of freedom ( City rights). As a result, it developed into a flourishing trading center and important trading center. After all, there was also a Savoyard military port here with war galleys and a shipyard. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, Villeneuve came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Vevey. In 1798 Villeneuve was assigned to the Aigle district and part of it when the canton of Vaud was founded.

By train
Villeneuve train station is located on the Simplon line from Lausanne to Brig. It is only served by regional trains and is the terminus of the S-Bahn lines S1 and S3 of the Léman S-Bahn.
