background

The municipality of Aigle is the district capital of the district Aigle. In addition to the main town of Aigle, the municipality also includes the districts of Le Cloître, Vers Pousaz and Fontanney. Aigle is the center of wine-growing in the Vaudois Chablais, and namesake of the Aigle wine.

The history can be traced back to the Bronze Age, as several graves and ceramics from this time have been found. The Roman road over the Great St. Bernhard also passed here. The remains of a villa and an aqueduct have been preserved from the Roman period. The place was first mentioned in a document around 1150. In 1076, Emperor Heinrich IV handed over the Aigle area to the sovereignty of the House of Savoy. In the late 11th century a noble family named d'Aigle built a castle here. In 1231, Aigle received market rights under Count Thomas I of Savoy. In 1314, Aigle was raised to town with a letter of freedom from Amadeus V of Savoy. In 1475, Bern conquered the area and Aigle became a subject of the canton of Bern, which remained so until the cantons were reorganized during the Napoleonic period. Then Aigle came to the newly founded canton of Vaud and remained an important transport hub in the development of the rail network.

getting there

The town is very conveniently located. The main road number 11 branches off from the main road number 9 over the Col des Mosses into the Pays d'Enhaut Lausanne connects with the Valais. These are the Chemin de fer Aigle-Leysin, the Chemin de fer Aigle-Ollon-Monthey-Champéry and the Chemin de fer Aigle-Sépey-Diablerets. These are now under one roof, which they merged to form Transports Publics du Chablais.

Bus lines are responsible for the fine distribution in public transport, they also ensure the connection to the surrounding area. There are bus routes from Aigle to Corbeyrier, Villars-sur-Ollon, Torgon and Saint-Gingolph.
