Map of Leysin

background

The municipality belongs to the Aigle district and also to the region Chablais.

The community is located on a wide terrace on the southern slope of the Tour d'Aï, high above the valley of the Grande Eau, on the east side of the Rhone Valley.

In addition to Leysin, the municipality also includes the following districts and Alpine settlements, Feydey, Les Esserts, En Crettaz, Veyges, Aï and Mayen.

The development as a tourist resort began around 1870, when Leysin acquired a good reputation as a climatic health resort at that time. As a result, many new hotels were built. Around 1900 Leysin was one of the places with a very good international reputation for the treatment of tuberculosis sufferers. Due to the location and orientation to the south, the patients were subjected to sun therapy. After all, the haze and high fog cover of the Rhône valley is mostly below, and because of its southern exposure it is also protected from the north winds. In the heyday of the sanatoriums there were around 80 of them. At this time, Leysin was also developing into a winter sports resort. After the Second World War, the sanatoriums for tuberculosis sufferers were over, but by the 1950s the slump was over and Leysin became the tourist destination it is today.
