background
The town is located on the western plateau around 130 meters above the river valley of the Venoge.
In addition to the town of Cossonay, the municipality of Cossonay also includes the hamlet of Allens.
The remains of a Roman villa and an early medieval burial ground were discovered in the municipality. It was first mentioned in a document in 1096, when Ulrich von Cossonay donated the village church to the Romainmôtier monastery. The church came into the possession of the Benedictines of Lutry in 1224, who had a priory built here in the second half of the 13th century. The place was verifiably fortified in the 11th century, in the 13th and 14th centuries the curtain walls were renewed and expanded. The place received its town charter for the first time around 1264, which had to be renewed in 1398 due to the town fire and the loss of the archive. The barons of Cossonay, who had their seat here, were an important noble family in the High Middle Ages. When the Baroness Johanna von Cossonay died in 1406, the rulership had died out, and in 1421 at the latest the area came to the House of Savoy. With the conquest of Vaud, the town came under Bern administration and was subordinate to Morges. Between 1798 and 2007, Cossonay was the capital of its own district Cossonay. As of January 1, 2008, it will again belong to the extended district Morges at.
