Vallorbe is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Vaud.

background

Vallorbe is located in a basin at the foot of the Mont d'Ore. Here the Orbe emerges again from a karst spring, after which it was im Vallée de Joux has seeped away.

In addition to the village of Vallorbe, the municipality also includes the following localities, Le Day and Les Grands Marais, the latter is already in the geographical area of the Valle de Joux.

Vallorbe has long been an important transport hub and industrial location. The latter mainly through the use of the hydropower of the Orbe.

It is believed that the valley was made usable around the year 1100, by the monks from the monastery Romainmôtier. The place is first mentioned in a document from Pope Innocent II in 1139. In that year a daughter priory of Romainmôtier was founded here, even before that the whole valley belonged to the monastery. The development of the valley was then shaped by iron smelting and hammer forges. In 1536, Vallorbe came under the rule of Bern and was assigned to the administration of the Romainmôtier bailiwick, where it formed its own court. It has belonged to the Orbe district since 1798, and to this canton since the founding of Vaud. On January 1st, 2008 Vallorbe becomes part of the new district Jura North Vaudois.

A part of Vallorbe was badly affected by the great fire in 1883.
