Orbe is a Swiss City in the canton Vaud.

background

Around 150 AD, the Romans founded the Urba settlement at the junction of the Herrstrasse, which came from Lausanne, on the edge of the Orbe plain, when the Orbe emerged from the Jura foot plateau. While the main branch to Aventicum (Avenches) forte, the other branch of the road ran over the Col de Jougne to Vesontio (Besançon). The settlement was probably abandoned after the Germanic invasions in the 3rd century. It was not until the 9th century that records of a settlement on this site were available again. Between 1270 and 1300 the settlement near the castle was fortified and given market rights. The settlement received city rights in 1404.
