Yverdon-les-Bains is a Swiss City in Canton Vaud.

Yverdon is at the western end of the Lake Neuchâtel. It is the capital of the district of the same name. The thermal spa has only been called Yverdon-les-Bains since 1982. When someone only talks about Yverdon, they mean the same city.

Churches

  • Reformed city church. The church was built in 1755 in Roman Baroque style from ocher-colored Jurassic limestone. However, the bell tower of the previous Gothic building from the 13th century was retained. The interior includes a circumferential gallery and the remains of choir stalls from 1502.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

  • Yverdon Castle. Founded in 1260 by Peter II of Savoy. From the 16th to the 18th century, the castle was the seat of the Bernese bailiffs, who redesigned it. In 1804 the city acquired the castle and in 1825 the Pestalozzi Educational Institute was established here. The historical museum (Musée d'Yverdon et sa region) was opened here in 1912, and this museum still exists today.
  • Remains of the Roman fort

Buildings

  • Hotel de Ville. The town hall was built from 1767 to 1773. The granary used to stand here. Art exhibitions are held in the town hall all year round.Open: Tue - Sun 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.Price: free entry.
  • Casino. The building dates from 1898 and is located between Place Pestalozzi and the train station. It is a typical spa town building and with its neon baroque architecture brought a touch of Monaco to Yverdon. The ballrooms were converted in 1998 for a city theater, which was named after the Brecht student and theater director Benno Besson (1922-2006).

  • Pestalozzidenkmal. On the Place Pestalozzi in front of the church is the Pestalozzidenkmal, which was created in 1890. Heinrich Pestalozzi was considered the "inventor" of the modern school according to the motto: "head, heart and hand".

Streets and squares

  • Place Pestalozzi. The square has been traffic-calmed and is one of the most beautiful in the Vaud region. The reformed town church and the town hall stand on it. A monument by Heinrich Pestalozzi stands by the church.

  • Menhirs of Clendy. The Menhirs of Clendy, is a prehistoric stone avenue. It consists of 45 menhirs and statue menhirs and is one of the most impressive megalithic structures in Switzerland. They all date from the Neolithic Age (3000 BC). Some of them also show human contours. They can be reached by bus 1 (to the Clendy stop) or you can walk from the train station on the marked hiking trail (25 minutes).
