Lake Neuchâtel - Neuenburgersee

The Lake Neuchâtel (FrenchLac de Neuchâtel) is on law-South foot in the Seeland in the Switzerland. Its area is 217.9 km², making Lake Neuchâtel the largest lake that lies entirely on Swiss soil. It is also the largest lake at the edge of the Jura and is located in the cantons Neuchâtel, Vaud, Freiburg and Bern.

The north-western shore of Lake Neuchâtel with the city of Neuchâtel lies at the southern foot of the Jura, the southeast coast in the Swiss Mitteland. Large natural landscapes have been preserved in various bank areas and are protected as nature reserves. The lake is through the Zihlkanal with the Lake Biel and connected to Lake Murten. Passenger ships operate on the three lakes.

French is spoken almost exclusively around Lake Neuchâtel. The exception is the north bank, near the Fanel nature reserve, which belongs to the German-speaking community of Gampelen.

By train

There are three railway lines around Lake Neuchâtel. By far the most important is the southern foot line of the Jura, which is operated by SBB. The following train connections operate on this line:

  • ICN St. Gallen - Zurich HB - Biel / Bienne - Neuchâtel - Yverdon-les-Bains - Lausanne
  • ICN Basel - Biel / Bienne - Neuchâtel - Yverdon-les-Bains - Geneva - Geneva Airport

The ICNs stop at Lake Neuchâtel just in Neuchâtel and Yverdon-les-Bains

  • R Biel / Bienne - Neuchâtel (the only stop on the lake is Neuchâtel)
  • R Neuchâtel - Gorgier-St-Aubin (with stops in Neuchâtel Serrières, Auvernier, Colombier, Boudry and Bevaix)

In addition, the BLS operates the Neuchâtel-Bern line (Neuchâtel-Murten-Friborg), which runs past the east bank. Train connections:

  • RE Neuchâtel - Bern direct, only with a stop in Ins and Kerzers)
  • S5 Neuchâtel - Kerzers (-Bern) (with stops in St-Blaise Lac, Marin-Epagnier Zihlbrück and Gampelen)
