Romainmôtier-Envy is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Vaud.
background
The double community, consisting of the villages of Romainmôtier and Envy, is located on the Jura foot plateau, west of the Orbe incision on the Nozon river. It was created on January 1, 1970, when the two previously independent communities merged.
The area was already settled in Roman times. At that time, iron ore was being smelted in the area. The remains of the iron smelting furnace have been found in the Bellaires forest. Two smelting furnaces from the 6th century have been preserved.
The story of the City of Romainmôtier is closely related to that of the Romainmôtier monastery, which is said to have been founded as early as the 5th century. The first surviving records, however, only date from the 8th century.
Over time, a sizable settlement developed next to the monastery, which of course benefited from the monastery 's heyday from the 11th to the 15th century. In the 13th century the village came under the influence of the Dukes of Savoy, and when the Bernese came to power, the monastery was closed and the Bailiwick of Romainmôtier was established. Along with Lausanne, it was considered the richest bailiwick, as it encompassed the entire Valle de Joux and the area between Orbe and Cossonay. In 1589 Romainmôtier even received city rights.
With the collapse of the ancien régime, the bailiwick was broken up and Romainmôtier came to the district of Orbe, and thus to this canton when the Waddt was founded. On January 1st, 2008 it will be part of the new district Jura north vaudois.
The Envy locality was first mentioned in 1216. It was and still is a farming village, about which there is not much to tell.
getting there
The main street number 9 from Cossonay above La Sarraz to Vallorbe passes outside the village, you have to leave it at Croy. The road to be used continues via Vaulion to Le Pont im Vallée de Joux.
The Croy-Romainmôtier train station is located on the municipal boundary between the two villages, around 1.5 kilometers from Romainmôtier. The trains of the S 2 stop here every hour (Lausanne-Vallorbe) on the Léman S-Bahn.
There is a post bus line from Croy to Vaulion and a second from Croy via Romainmôtier and La Praz to L'Isle.
