background

The high valley has no surface drainage. The western part is on French soil, mainly because of the arbitrary demarcation at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, where the Orbe rises in the Lac des Reousses. This then flows in a north-easterly direction into the Lac de Joux, which has no drainage. The bar of the Dent de Vaulion forms the north-eastern end of the valley. In the northwest the valley is flanked by the Risoux chain, in the southeast by the Mont-Tendre chain.

climate

The climate is very harsh. Due to the closed valley shape, a cold air lake often forms here, whereby temperatures down to - 30 ° C are not uncommon in winter. That's why the lakes freeze over very quickly.
