background

The city is also the capital of the district of the same name Nyon.

The districts of L'Asse and partly Changins also belong to the community.

Traces of settlement up to the Neolithic can be found in this area. At that time there was already a settlement by the lake. It has been proven that the Noviodunos fortification was located here in the 1st century BC and was inhabited by the Helvetians. The city was probably destroyed when they moved in 58 BC. In any case, the Romans ordered the construction of the city in 45 BC Colonia Iulia Equestris at. The city quickly rose to become the most important city on Lake Geneva, the center of which was located near today's castle. Over time, Aventicum (Avenches) more and more important, and outstripped the city. In the late Roman period, the city was also owned by Genava (Geneva) outstripped. The city was destroyed for the first time in the middle of the 3rd century. However, it was rebuilt under the name Civitas Equestri. The ultimate end for the Roman settlement came with the devastation of the city in the 5th century. The city was re-established in the 11th or 12th century. At that time Nyon belonged to the Prangins rule and in 1293 it came to the House of Savoy. Nyon received city rights in the 13th century. And was even a mint until the 15th century.
