Castle of Avenches

This place was the most important Roman settlement in today's Switzerland. Aventicum, as Avenches was called at the time, was the capital of the Roman Civitas Helvetiorum.

The decline of Aventicum began in the 3rd century. It was a bishop's seat until the 6th century, but when the seat was moved to Lausannes, the settlement sank into insignificance.

In 1074, the Lausanne bishop Burkhard von Oltigen founded a new city. At the beginning it was called Adventica, since 1518 it has been called Avenches. In the 13th century, a German name for the town appears for the first time, and what is astonishing about it is the fact that it has nothing to do with the previous name. The initial Wibilsburg became Wiflisburg over time, but the name is no longer used today. In connection with the conquest of Vaud in 1536 by Bern, Avenches was now under Bernese rule and became the seat of the Avenches bailiff. In 1798 Avenches was added to the canton of Friborg. But this was only a temporary condition for four years. Because Avenches wanted and came to the newly founded canton of Vaud in 1803.

On July 1, 2006 the parish Donatyre incorporated into Avenches.

getting there

Train & bus

Avenches is connected to the rail network by the Murten - Payerne regional train. The trains run every hour. There are also a few bus routes to Freiburg (Üechtland). However, this bus course sometimes has gaps in intervals of four hours. Current timetables are available from SBB. From Bern, for example, you can take the S5 to Murten and change there to the regional train.

In the street

Avenches has its own exit on the A1 motorway, which leads from Geneva via Lausanne to Bern and on to Zurich and St. Gallen. Avenches is also on Hauptstrasse 1, which leads from Payerne to Murten.

mobility

Everything in Avenches can be explored on foot. From Avenches train station you can walk to the train station in around fifteen minutes.
