Murten is a city in the canton Freiburg in the Switzerland. Its official name is bilingual, Murten / Morat.

Murten is the regional cultural and economic center of the northern part of the canton of Friborg. The medieval Zähringer town, with its historic old town, has above all because of the Battle of Murten of extraordinary historical importance for Switzerland. They defeated the army of the Murten Charles the Bold, and had thereby more than made up for the defeat at Grandson. The approximately 12 km² large municipal area includes the town located on a hill on Lake Murten, as well as the incorporated villages of Altavilla and Burg. The city is officially bilingual, but German clearly predominates at 76.5%.
