The Chillon Castle lies on or better in Lake Geneva. That about 5 kilometers southeast of Montreux The moated castle is certainly one of the most famous castles in Switzerland. It is located on a natural rock island in the lake.

A castle was first mentioned at this point in the 9th century. The oldest surviving building in today's castle dates from the 11th century. However, traces dating back to the Bronze Age have been found during excavations. In the 12th century the castle became the property of the Savoy above, under these the castle was expanded. In 1536, the canton of Bern was able to take the castle after its crew fled across the lake. Francois Bonivard was also freed. This exemption served Lord Byron as a template for his famous poem The prisoner of Chillon.

The castle is open all year round, it is only closed on January 1st and December 25th.

The visiting times are:

  • April to September: from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last admission 6 p.m.)
  • October: from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last admission 5 p.m.)
  • January-February November-December: from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last admission 5 p.m.)
  • March: from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (last entry 5:00 p.m.)
