The Canton of Valais (officially State of Valais, FrenchBudget du Valais) is in the south of the Switzerland. The Valais borders Italy, France as well as the Swiss cantons Bern, Ticino, Vaud and Uri.
Regions
The Valais can be divided into the French-speaking Lower Valais and in that German-speaking Upper Valais organize. The language border is formed by the Raspille stream, which flows into the Rhône. This brook lies a little above Sierre in the Pfynwald.
The main valley of the Valais is a Rhône valley. The Rhône arises here in the Rhône glacier. From there the Rhône flows through the Valais from east to west. At Martigny makes the Rôhne a striking one 90 degree arc to the north. At Le Bouveret (Port-Valais) the Rhône flows into the Lake Geneva. In the German-speaking Valais, the Rhône is called "Rotten". In addition to this main valley, there are also many side valleys.
