The main valley of the Valais is a Rhône valley. The Rhône arises here in the Rhône glacier. From there the Rhône flows through the Valais from east to west. At Martigny makes the Rôhne a striking one 90 degree arc to the north. At Le Bouveret (Port-Valais) the Rhône flows into the Lake Geneva. In the German-speaking Valais, the Rhône is called "Rotten".
