background
The main settlement is located above the Dala Gorge. It is the district capital of the Leuk district of the same name.
The greater part of the municipality is located south of the Rhone and includes a large part of the Pfynwald, although the main settlement is north of the river.
There could be traces of settlement up to 4000 BC. Be proven. The Romans also settled here. There is a historical crossroads here, because the Gemmi Pass was already used extensively by the Romans, and this path meets the main path through Valais. The Romans also owe the vineyards on the south-facing mountain slopes. In the Middle Ages, the settlement remained an important trading center, and a summer residence was built here by the Bishop of Sion.
The antenna dishes above Leuk are visible from afar. In addition to the commercial satellite service provider SES Americon, they are also used by the Swiss State Security.
