Saas-Fee is a well-known winter sports resort and tourist center in the district Visp, Canton Valais, in the Switzerland. Both in winter and in summer, the place offers countless opportunities for recreational activities and hosts numerous events.

The village is located at around 1800 m on a high plateau in the Saas Valley. On December 31, 2011, a total of 1759 people lived in Saas-Fee. It is the capital of the four sub-communities that are in the Saas Valley. The remaining three are Saas-Balen, Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell. In the south, the Saas Valley is closed off by the Mattmark Dam, the highest earth dam in Europe. This is in the Saas-Almagells district. There is only a connection to neighboring Italy via hiking trails.

getting there

By plane

The nearest airport is in Manners (French: Sion), but only very few planes take off and land here. The next major airports are in Geneva (French: Genève), Bern-Belp and Zurich-Kloten.

By train

There is no train connection in Saas-Fee.

The train station can be reached by train in Brig-Glis or Visp. There you change to the bus (called “PostBus” in Switzerland), which goes directly to Saas-Fee.

In the street

Via the A9 from east or west to Visp. Through the Lötschberg tunnel, then over Stalden and Saas-Balen to Saas-Grund. There the road then leads up to Saas-Fee. The car must be parked in the multi-storey car park when entering the town

By boat

It is not possible to travel by ship across the Rhône.

Car-free

The entire place is traffic-calmed and car-free, with the exception of electric cars ("Elektros") or handcarts. Furthermore, the following vehicles are allowed to enter the site contrary to the driving ban: ambulance, police, winter service, fire department and hearse.

Electric cars ("Electros")

Since guests have to park their cars in the large parking garage at the entrance to the village, most hoteliers and some taxi companies offer transport services for their guests and their luggage. The ski slopes can be reached with the various mountain railways that are located at the southern end of the village.

Bicycles ("Velos")

Cycling in Saas-Fee is allowed. As a cyclist, however - as is generally the case in pedestrian zones - you are on an equal footing with pedestrians and you have to be considerate as the streets and alleys are often very narrow and confusing.

Local buses

There are a total of 5 in Saas-Fee Local bus lines. During the season, these usually run during the rush hours in the morning and afternoon. The use of the buses is free for all residents and guests. The buses are also electric vehicles.

A ride on the is also popular Allalino, an electrically powered locomotive with two trailers. This vehicle offers space for a total of 56 people and can be used for a tour of the village.

Saas-Fee is the end point (or the start) for the Haute route, the classic area crossing of the Valais Alps on skis or on foot. The Haute Route runs out Argentière over the northern part of Mont Blanc and in several daily stages to Zermatt and in the extension to Saas-Fee.

In summer

In the winter

Alpine skiing

Since the end of the last century, the ski area in Saas-Fee has developed into an internationally visited destination for winter sports enthusiasts, also because of the backdrop with the numerous four-thousand-meter peaks. The ski area itself is in the mountains of the Allalin group.

Mittelallalin station, glacier ski area

The 1984 opened Metro Alpin is a completely underground funicular in the uppermost section of the mountain railways to the glacier ski area. The Metro Alpin runs from the Felskinn station (approx. 2,980 m) to the Mittelallalin terminus with a panorama restaurant as the highest revolving restaurant in the world (approx. 3456 m). The operator advertises the mountain railway as the highest underground railway in the world.

The Glacier ski area (from approx. 3,000 m, 20 kilometers of slopes) and below the Allalinhorns located, enables summer skiing, the season extends from the beginning of July to the end of April.

For snowboarders: Freestyle park in the Morenia area, in summer on the glacier halfpipe and Boarder-X.

The mountain restaurants around Saas-Fee are usually open in the winter and summer seasons. However, between April and July some locations are temporarily closed due to company holidays. It is therefore advisable to check the homepage in advance or to make a short call with a query.

Cell phones usually have good reception in town and on the hiking trails. It should be noted that when using it between EU countries and Switzerland, considerable telephone charges can be incurred. The same applies to using the Internet via mobile communications. There are still many telephone booths in the village that also accept euros.
