Argentière lies at the feet of the Mont Blanc in the department Haute-Savoie (France). The mountaineering village is the highest place in the Chamonix valley, a popular ski region in winter and the starting point for tours in the northern part of the year-round Mont Blanc.

The 1 Argentière railway station is a stop on the St Gervais - Le Fayet / Vallorcine line Martigny (CH). It is located on the southern edge of the village. From Lausanne you have to change trains twice (Martigny and Vallorcine) and it takes a good two hours.

Argentière is located in the very north of the Chamonix valley and is the last town before the border with Switzerland.

  • Of north from Switzerland (Valais) and from Germany: through the Rhone Valley to Martigny and over the less pronounced mountain pass Col des Montets (1,461 m) in the direction of Camonix to Argentière.
  • Of west from France or Geneva: on the A 40 (Mont-Blanc motorway) or after the end of the motorway continue on the N 205 "Route Blanche", when you come to the junction to the Mont-Blanc tunnel (Turin / Milan), go straight on the D 1506 towards Chamonix / Martigny, follow this another 11 km to Argentière.

The Argentière cable car leads in two sections, first to the Lognan plateau (1972 m, mountain restaurant) and then on to the Aiguille des Grands Montets (3295 m). Year-round operation.

Argentière is the starting point (or destination) of the Haute route, the classic area crossing of the Valais Alps on skis or on foot. The Haute Route leads over the northern part of Mont Blanc and in several daily stages up to Zermatt and in the extension until after Saas-Fee.

The "Les Grands Montets" ski area in Argentière is more popular with the sportier and younger skiers because of its fairly demanding slopes, but there are also easier downhill runs. The resort reaches an altitude of 3,295 m on the Argentière glacier, the season extends into April and May, and skiing is carried out on the glacier of Argentière and on the slopes of Lognan and La Pendant. In addition to the groomed slopes, there are also some deep snow slopes.
