The city Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy of the same name Luxembourg. With over 100,000 inhabitants, it is also by far the largest city in the Grand Duchy.

The river Alzette flows through the inner city.

Info

In 963, Count Siegfried built a castle with a simple defensive wall on Bock rock. From this the city of Luxembourg arose. Over the centuries, two more defensive belts were built on the west side. Several engineers, including Vauban, built the city into one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. This gave Luxembourg the nickname Gibraltar of the North.

At the Congress of London in 1867 Luxembourg was declared neutral and the fortifications had to be dismantled. As a result, only 10% of the fortress has been preserved, including the casemates that still served as shelter during the Second World War.

The Old Town and some surviving fortifications were placed on the World Heritage List in 1994.

Luxembourg is one of the richest cities in Europe. The city is an important city for the international banking world. At the same time, the city is together with Brussels and Strasbourg one of the main locations of European institutions.

Arrive

By plane

There is an airport, Findel Airport, in Luxembourg. From Findel there are 2 bus lines to the city center and the station (Line 9 via Neudorf and line 16 via Kirchberg).

By train

Luxembourg's central station (Luxembourg Gare) is ideally located for the city and is the hub for train, city bus and regional transport. There are direct train connections with Namur and Brussels (every hour), Trier (every hour), Paris (TGV 5x a day), Metz (every hour) and Liège (every 2 hours).

By car

from Germany (Trier): follow the A64/E44, this turns into the Luxembourg A1 at the border. For the city center, near the airport follow the signs "Kirchberg/ Center Europeen" You will then enter the city center via Avenue J.F.Kennedy and pont Grand Duchesse Charlotte.

From Belgium (Arlon): Follow the E25/A4, it turns into the Luxembourg A6 at the border. For the city center, take exit 4 (Strassen) and follow the signs "Instituts Europeens" (Route d'Arlon), at the end turn right (Boulevard Grande Duchesse Charlotte) and follow this avenue until Avenue Marie-Therese and turn left here . You will then arrive at the Boulevard Royal in the center.

From France (Thionville): Follow the French A31/E25 in a northerly direction, which turns into the Luxembourg A3 at the border. Follow this highway until you enter a tunnel. Immediately after the tunnel, turn left (Route de Thionville) and after the viaduct over the railway, turn right along the road, past the station. You enter the center via the Avenue de la Gare and the "Viaduc".

Look out! Parking in the center, like in other major cities, is a nightmare and very expensive. It is better to park on the Kirchberg (near the Foire or the center Auchan) or on the route de Arlon near the stadium to continue into the city by bus.

By bus

Most of the buses from outside Luxembourg City arrive at the CFL station (Gare de Luxembourg). Most buses from the North and Northeast also stop at the Center Hamilius on the edge of the city centre. The regional bus lines in Luxembourg are operated by the CFL and the RGTR.

The tram serves a single line, which will be extended to the railway station in early 2020, and to the airport in 2021. The tram is fully integrated with bus and train, and a tram ticket costs the same as a bus ticket.

The main employers in the city are the many banks and the European institutions. Citizens of the Schengen countries do not need a separate work permit (for formalities see the page of the Grand Duchy, section works).

To buy

Luxembourg is known for its lower taxes on alcohol and tobacco. As a result, drinks and cigarettes are generally cheaper than in the rest of the EU, although this has become less due to the introduction of the Euro. The Luxembourgish white wines(Gewuerztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Elbling) are excellent.
