Info

Lombardy can be seen as the economic engine of Italy. If it had been independent, it would have been as important (and prosperous) as Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Dutch Randstad, Sweden, Flanders or Denmark. It is also densely populated; 395 inhabitants per square kilometer, but remember that only half of Lombardy is buildable (the rest is mountain slopes), so it is very busy. Factories dominate Lombardy: Iveco, Piaggio, De'Longhi, Zanussi, Dalmine, Brembo, Alfa Romeo. Publishing houses and the commercial media (Berlusconi's Mediaset) and a huge food industry (Parmalat, Ferrero, Star, meat, pasta, wine, olive oil, ice cream, confectionery, milk, cheese) also make money in Lombardy. Milan is the financial heart of Italy with its stock exchange, banks, insurance companies and its trade fairs and exhibitions. Milan is the fashion capital of the world with Paris, and all over Lombardy you will find leather factories, weaving mills, sewing workshops, leather workers and shoe factories. The furniture industry may be mentioned separately, or the builders of kitchens and kitchen machines for companies and private individuals. Around Bergamo and Brescia you will find iron foundries, machine factories, manufacturers of air conditioning and refrigeration installations, and small and large suppliers for the automotive industry. In the countryside of the Po Valley you will find pig and chicken farms.
