The capital is Agrigento. The province is bordered on the west by the province Trapani, north by county Palermo and to the east by the province Caltanissetta. Also the Pelagic Islands in the Strait of Malta between Italy and Tunisia belong to this province. The official abbreviation is AG.

Language

In the province of Agrigento, next to the Italian also spoken Sicilian (Siculo) which is closely related to the dialect of Calabria. Sicilian is considered a separate language.

Landscape

The landscape of the province of Agrigento is mainly hilly. In the north, however, where the province is part of the mountain range of the Monti Sicani, peaks occur above 1000 m. Three reservoirs try to regulate the water in the dry province. Despite this, the water supply is problematic and there is often a lack of drinking water. The Monti Sicani are located in a regional park with three nature reserves.

The province of Agrigento is one of the warmest provinces of Sicily. Still, it suffers less from the extreme weather conditions that occur elsewhere on the island during high heat. In the summer, in July and August, the average daytime temperature is quite high, with 26 to 27 °C. The humidity is high. In the southwest it can often be foggy. Along the coast and in the coastal plains, the temperature rarely drops below 8 °C in winter.

The plane is most commonly used to reach Sicily. There are international airports in Catania, Palermo, Trapani and Comiso in the province Ragusa.

There is no international airport in the province. You are dependent on one of the four airports in Sicily:

  • Palermo (Falcone e Borsellino), Punta Raisi Airport-Cinis (35 km Palermo),  39 324 4190827 (mobile). (IATA : PMO, ICAO : LICCJ). The Trinacria Express is a train between Punta Raisi Airport and the city of Palermo (travel time 45 min., fare € 5.80 one way). At Palermo Centrale station, you can then de train take to Agrigento Centrale station (travel time 2 hours, fare €7.20 one way). Between Punta Raisi Airport and the city of Agrigento there are also direct buses from Sal Autolinee (travel time 2.30 hours, fare € 12.60 one way)
  • Trapani (Vincenzo Florio Airport) (18 km Trapani),  39 0923 610111. (IATA : TPS, ICAO : LICK). Salemic provides a bus connection from Trapani Birgi Aeroporto to Mazara del Vallo. By car

The province of Agrigento is easily accessible from all corners of the world. From Palermo about the SS121 and SS189, from Trapani and Syracuse (Siracusa) about the SS115 and from Catania through gela about the SS417 and SS115. There are no motorways through the province of Agrigento, but the main roads are generally good to drive.

By train

There are no highways through the province. The main roads are generally easy to drive and traverse the entire province.

By bus

Bus lines reach almost every tourist destination in the province of Agrigento. There are 3 companies in Sicily, ast, Interbus and saïs, which connect the main cities. Local connections are also guaranteed by many smaller companies, but they only run on weekdays. Timetables are available at the company offices or at the bus stations.   •    Campobello di Licataa. Campobello di Licata is located in the valley of the river Salso, in the corner of Canicatti, Naro and Licata. Once there was also sulfur mining here, now it is agricultural.

Heraclea Minoa-Greek Theater
  •    Heraclea Minoa. Just east of the mouth of the River Platania, about between Sciacca and Agrigento lies the village of Heraclea Minoa. For centuries battles were fought in this area between Carthage and Agrigento fought. In the end it became a Roman colony. In the archaeological area there is a small museum where you can admire ceramics, pottery, figurines and an archaic female head from the sixth century BC. Particularly impressive is the well-preserved Greek Theater whose seats are placed towards the sea. To preserve it for future generations, the theater has been covered up at the expense of its charm. On the plain above the theater the remains of two old Hellenistic houses have been found. There are also the remains of the city wall that was once 6 km long. Heraclea Minoa also has his white coast, the Capo Bianco with a nice beach...and a FKK (Frei-körper-kultur). This, of course, led to opposition Sicily is, after all, 100% Catholic. The Pelagic Islands, Linosa, Lampedusa and lantern, form a protected area within the borders of the province of Agrigento (Italian: Area Marina Protetta Isola Pelagie). The total area covers 4136 hectares. It is a paradise for divers and snorkellers and for people seeking tranquility. The islands are connected by ferry to Porto Empedoclea, a port city that Agrigento can be reached. During the summer season it is also possible to travel by fast hydrofoil (Aliscafo) travel. From Palermo and Catania you can go by plane to Lampedusa. At Lampedusa you can rent Bikes/Boats...to explore the island.
